Artist Statement
My paintings show the hard-edged geometric forms of towers and cameras, sometimes contrasting with the organic forms of trees and undergrowth, symbolising the relationship between people and nature.
I create everyday scenes, which highlight the inclusion of modern communications and surveillance equipment into our shared environment. Mobile phone masts sit atop buildings and hillsides, poles bristle with spotlights and cameras, the dark robotic structures rise above us into the grey skies. They feel out of place and almost sinister, yet they form an integral part of our modern society. My paintings bring these often-ignored monolithic structures into a gallery situation to enable the viewer to confront their ideas and feelings about them.
I use inks and paints on board, which I feel gives my paintings a certain weight and solidity to them. I like the tactile quality of raw MDF and enjoy how the layers of precise lines, colour and varnishes can transform this simple material into something that feels precious and meaningful.
